Monday, 09:56 pm, 19 July 2004 Warfare? No Bull I found an old version of Noble Warfare tonight. When I mean old, I mean about three months old. It was monochrome, but it had most of the functionality of the current version bar the old battle method. It was so much faster and more fun to watch. The current version everything moves disjointedly. The only thing against the old version was clumping in close combat which can be fixed simply by controlling when close combat movement takes effect. So three months forward, two months back. Although implementing the new non-movement related improvements should take less time. In other news, I have been playing Task Force Dagger to get my real time first person tactical combat fix. I was a huge fan of the Rainbow Six games. The suspense! TFD is good. It seems to rate 7.5-8 out of 10 and I can see why. But it does its job and is relatively fast on my wife's machine. I have found going for games that have a recommended memory requirement of 64Mb is the safe option. Anything more and my wife's machine begins to crawl. So I got three games, including TFD for UKP20. Economical and fun. The past two weeks have been heavy commission weeks with Fred Reed, Tammy Haye and Chris Blair all getting paid. After a couple of months of no commission payments, I was getting used to not having parcels of miniatures coming in. I am sure there is something deeper about the commission work - although both the Tammy and Chris work were for many months ago. Aside from the academic blocks of code conversion and Noble Warfare development I have been thinking about music. What happened to the Barbalet CDs? It wouldn't take much to produce a six track EP. I should get into the habit of making music once again. I still have the basic means. I just need to put the tracks together. I sent Loe Pesci a postscript email asking if he ever wanted a mix/remix, to drop me an email. Out of the flow of the previous emails... who can tell. Good night. Wednesday, 08:31 pm, 14 July 2004 Loes Gotta Email I got an email from Loe Pesci last night commenting on a couple of factual inconsistencies in my entry earlier in the month. Aside from an analysis of Atta, Loes mentioned that the track was called Gotta Eat not Needs to Eat. Reductio Warfare I have been writing in recent log entries about the development of Noble Warfare. This evening I worked at reducing the code even more. The use of random factors in movement and in other areas clouds the code somewhat. Also the unit -> combatant distinction with regards to movement has been removed with the new idea of a particle having the properties of speed, location and direction facing. Basically location and vectorised speed, based on direction facing. In all but close combat situations, the unit as a whole can be treated as a 'particle' and in close combat situations, the particles are the individual combatants. It has produced a number of simplifications through the code. The current Noble Warfare leaves me feeling resolute about the timeframes associated with the development. My family in Australia have been complaining about the lack of current photos they have of me. To this end I took my digital camera in to work yesterday and using the timing function on the camera took a couple of photos of me on the way in. Without any visual or audio clues, you can wonder what is going on with the camera. This snap captures that instant and also gives background to the resolute Tom. ![]() Good night. Monday, 10:46 pm, 12 July 2004 The Originator of the Polymorphic Sound... I got an email from Alex 'Gurap' Brooks this morning saying that his father had heard one of my tracks on ABC FM Radio. When I was in Australia, it was a classical music channel although they may have migrated to easy listening in my absence. When I lived in Australia, my music was played occasionally on radio. During Australian music week in particular there was a need to play virtually unknown Australian artists. But it is nice to get an email about radio play. In honour of this event, I dug out my copy of Isle of the Apes, my first CD. I haven't listened to the CD for more than a year. The music on Isle of the Apes - about half of it I can listen to. I don't know what I would be doing if I was recording music currently. I miss having a piano. Noble Pursuit The development of Noble Warfare continues. I have been having a two steps forward, three steps back couple of weeks with the development. I had this idea to add real-time line of sight updates to the map would be a great feature. The mantra needs to be keep it simple. It is an 'additional functions adds layered simplicity' situation. My instinct is to have solid multi-part solution functions. This is proving challenging. The other issue is dedicated time. Increasingly in the evenings I don't want to work on the problems that are coming up with Noble Warfare. Changing the function structure and adding layers produces more evening compatible work. Good night. [ Previous Log ]
