Tuesday, 07:42 pm, 11 May 2004 I pointed my Australian friend, Alex 'Gurap' Brooks at the weblog PDFs from the Log Archive. He asked me if I had anything to pass on to an old mutual friend and I said the PDFs would give a good start on the past year of my life at least. While passing the PDFs on, Alex looked through them himself and emailed me comments on various sections. I wonder about the Log sometimes. Whether the Log represents my thoughts and feelings. But, it appears, that the Log is very useful for a number of folks who want to keep contact. Either passively or actively. I promised a mood setting image of me, taken with an timed setting whilst mixing the beat for Butta. It is quite dark, particularly on Windows machines. But it captures the lighting, none the less. ![]() Good night. Monday, 10:43 pm, 10 May 2004 I spend far too much time finding exactly the right wording for emails. I have just spent about 45 minutes finding exactly the right way to ask a group of UK based members of the IGDA IPR Committee if they would like to present a Session at GDCE. I think it is something to do with formality. With work too, I spend far too much time thinking about how an email can be read. But it is particularly irritating late at night when I could be writing a perfectly good log entry. So what have I been musing about recently? I Write a Lot About Fantasy, But a War Without War Crimes? The photos of gleeful humiliation of prisoners in Iraq. For me, the pictures are no surprise. I guess I assume war crimes are a function of war. And when a country declares war they are giving a blank cheque on the conduct of their troops. This isn't a nice thing. It's reality. This is why unnecessary war should be detested because it suspends human rights. I wasn't surprised or shocked by the photographs, because I always thought that is what was going on. Guantanamo Bay too. I heard on the news that there are fifty procedures that the Red Cross have complained about that are standard US military practice that go against the Geneva Convention. It strikes me as very naive the outcry with regards to these images. Did people think that they were having cups of tea with the Iraqi's captured? Our governments have agreed to war crimes when they declare war. The final irony is the claim that the US servicefolk weren't adequately trained on the Geneva Convention. What that says is that the average person on the street in the US doesn't understand basic human rights. Or at least human rights WRT military conflict. Maybe name, rank and serial number was three things too many to learn at military academy. The best thing I saw on this was on the David Frost Show (aka Breakfast with Frost) on BBC1. Wilbur Smith noted that jobs get applicants with the right characteristics. In this line of work, only sadists apply. Frosty (as Krusty the Klown called him) is a staple of my Sunday mornings in the UK. Although his guests, particularly the paper-readers, are typically septuagenarians plus. More Happy Stuff... Montreal Mirror has rated WeFunk as number 7 on their list of top radio shows. How about a category that covers international recognition? How many radio shows in Montreal have an international listener base? I'm a huge fan of Rick Rubin. I think his contribution to rap and modern funk is phenomenal. A harder edge bringing back reality. Of the Grey Album, 99 Problems was one of my preferred tracks. Having seen the JayZ clip, Rick makes it listenable. Here is a broadband only, Windows Media Player link (from another weblog). Comfortably censored. The B word seems to be acceptable in some circles. Finally, I had a digital photo of yours-truly mixing the Butta Beats track. But it is on the wife's PC. So I need to upload it when I get off my laptop. Hopefully it will go online in the next couple of days. With a bit of luck, I will include a link to the first listenable mix of the Butta track. Although I still don't have a clue what the track is about (it's in Spanish). Perhaps an epic tale of running out of toilet paper and the comedic events that follow. Good night. [ Previous Log ]
